How to Count Words and Characters for Essays, Applications and Social Posts
Check your length before you submit.
Many applications and platforms enforce length limits, and some reject text that is over by even one word. A quick counter saves you from trimming at the last minute.
Typical limits worth knowing
| Where | Typical limit |
|---|---|
| Common App personal essay | 650 words maximum, 250 minimum |
| Post on X (Twitter), standard accounts | 280 characters |
| SEO title | About 50 to 60 characters before it may be cut off in search results |
| Meta description | About 150 to 160 characters |
| Resume | Usually one page, roughly 400 to 600 words |
Limits change, so confirm the current rule on the official site before you submit.
Words versus characters
- Words are counted by spaces in English. Hyphenated terms count as one word in most counters.
- Characters with spaces is the limit most text fields use.
- Characters without spaces is used by some translators and exams.
Reading time
Adults read roughly 200 to 250 words per minute, so a 1,000-word article takes about 4 to 5 minutes. Our counter uses 200 words per minute as an estimate.
