How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android (Free)
Fix the 'can't open HEIC' problem in under a minute.
iPhones save photos as HEIC (also called HEIF) by default. The format is efficient, but many Windows programs, older apps and upload forms still can't open it. If you've ever seen "unsupported file type" when attaching a photo, this is probably why.
Quickest fix: convert in your browser
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter
- Choose your .heic file
- Tap Convert to JPG
- Save the JPG
The conversion happens on your device. Your photo is not uploaded to a server, which matters if the picture is personal or contains an ID document.
Other ways
- On iPhone: go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC.
- On iPhone (sharing): when you AirDrop or email a photo, the Photos app can convert it for you. Look for the Options menu and choose the most compatible format.
- On Windows: Microsoft offers a HEIF image extension in the Microsoft Store. Some versions of the extension may cost money, so check before installing.
- On Mac: open the photo in Preview, choose File, Export, and pick JPEG.
HEIC vs JPG at a glance
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Usually smaller | Usually larger |
| Compatibility | Newer apps and Apple devices | Almost everything |
| Best for | Storing photos on your phone | Sharing, uploading, printing |
Good to know
- Converting to JPG recompresses the image, so quality drops very slightly.
- Live Photos convert to a single still image.
- Photos can carry GPS location. If you plan to post or sell something, see our guide to removing photo location data.
FAQ
Is HEIC the same as HEIF?
Closely related. HEIF is the container standard, and HEIC is the version Apple uses for photos.
Will I lose quality?
A small amount, as with any JPG. For normal viewing and uploads you are unlikely to notice.
Does the converter upload my photo?
No. It runs in your browser on your own device.
