How to Write an Amount in Thai Words on Cheques and Contracts
Write the amount in words correctly, without missing เอ็ด or ยี่.
Cheques, receipts and contracts often ask for the amount in both numbers and words. If they do not match, problems can follow later, and a bank may refuse a cheque. Check with your bank if unsure.
Common reading rules
- เอ็ด: a final digit of 1 after another digit. 11 is สิบเอ็ด and 101 is หนึ่งร้อยเอ็ด.
- ยี่สิบ: 20 to 29 use ยี่สิบ, not สองสิบ. 25 is ยี่สิบห้า.
- สิบ: 10 is สิบ, not หนึ่งสิบ.
- ล้าน: numbers from a million up are read in groups of 6 digits. 1,000,001 is หนึ่งล้านเอ็ด.
How to end the amount
A whole baht amount ends with ถ้วน. 1,250 baht is หนึ่งพันสองร้อยห้าสิบบาทถ้วน. With satang, read them at the end, so 150.75 baht is หนึ่งร้อยห้าสิบบาทเจ็ดสิบห้าสตางค์, with no ถ้วน.
