How to Count Words in Thai, and How Long an Essay or Post Should Be
Thai has no spaces between words, so counting is not straightforward.
Much writing has a length limit, such as essays, abstracts and ads. But counting Thai words is not like English, because Thai does not put a space between every word.
Words versus characters
- Word count: English is counted by spaces. Thai needs a word segmenter, so results can differ slightly between programs.
- Characters with spaces: the limit most input fields use.
- Characters without spaces: some institutions and exams specify this.
Reading time
A typical reader manages about 200 words per minute, a rough average. A 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes.
