Can't Open a HEIC Photo? Convert It to JPG for Free in Your Browser
iPhone photos sometimes won't open elsewhere. Convert them in seconds.
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, a format that usually stores pictures smaller than JPG at similar quality. But some programs, websites and computers can't open or upload it.
How to convert to JPG
- Open the HEIC to JPG tool
- Choose a .HEIC file
- Tap Convert to JPG
- Save the resulting file
Set your iPhone not to shoot HEIC
Go to Settings, choose Camera, then Formats, and pick Most Compatible. Menu names may differ by iOS version. This affects photos you take from now on. Older photos that are already HEIC must be converted.
Good to know
- One file at a time
- The first run can be slow because the converter has to load, and very large files may take several seconds
- Quality drops slightly, as with any JPG
- Your photo is never uploaded to a server
Why iPhones use HEIC
HEIC stores a picture of similar quality to JPG in a file that is usually smaller, saving space on the phone. But some software and many upload forms still don't support it, so you may need to convert for certain jobs.
HEIC compared with JPG
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Usually smaller | Usually larger |
| Opens on | Apple devices and newer programs | Almost everything |
| Best for | Storing photos on the phone | Sharing, uploading, printing |
Common issues after converting
- Slightly different colors: caused by color profile conversion, and usually barely visible.
- Live Photos: they become a single still image. The sound and short video are not kept.
- File too big for a site: convert to JPG, then use the Resize Photo tool.
- GPS still in the file: before posting publicly, use the Remove Photo Data tool.
Sending photos to Windows or Android
Most chat apps convert photos to JPG for you. Problems usually appear when you send the original file, attach it by email or copy it over a cable, which keeps the HEIC file.
