How to Watermark an ID Card Copy Safely (Free, in Your Browser)
Sending an ID card copy is hard to avoid. A watermark lowers the risk.
Sending a copy of your ID card is hard to avoid, whether you are applying for a job, opening an account or renting a place. The problem is that once the image is sent, the recipient can keep it and reuse it. A watermark is a simple way to reduce that risk.
What a watermark does and does not do
A watermark that says who the copy is for and why makes it harder to reuse the image for another purpose. But it cannot protect you completely. Someone determined may try to remove or crop it, so treat it as one layer of protection, not the only one.
What to write
- The organization receiving the document
- The purpose, such as: for job application only
- The date you sent it
Example: For job application at Company A only, 21/10/26. The more specific the text, the harder it is to reuse. A vague word like "copy" helps very little.
How to do it with this site's tool
- Open the ID watermark tool
- Choose a photo of your ID card, or tap the camera button on your phone
- Type the watermark text
- Adjust the opacity, then tap Create
- Save the image and send it
Tips
- The tool tiles the text diagonally across the whole image. Make sure it crosses the ID number and the photo, which is harder to crop out than a watermark in a corner.
- Don't make it too faint. Try about 50-60% opacity and check that the card details are still readable.
- If you don't need the back of the card, send only the front, because the code on the back is used to verify identity in some services.
- Ask the recipient which parts they need, and delete files you no longer need from your device and chats.
This site's tools run only in your browser. Your image is never uploaded to a server, which matters a lot for a document like an ID card.
Watermark wording that works
| Situation | Example text |
|---|---|
| Job application | For Company X job application only, 21/10/2026 |
| Opening an account | For identity verification with (company) only, 21/10/2026 |
| Renting a home | For the rental agreement with (landlord) only, 21/10/2026 |
| Sending to a buyer | For confirming this sale only, 21/10/2026 |
The rule is to state who it is for, what it is for and the date. If the copy is reused elsewhere, the text helps show you never meant it for that purpose.
Checklist before sending an ID copy
- Ask whether a copy is really needed. Sometimes an ID number or another form of verification will do.
- Cover the whole card with the watermark, not just a corner, because corners are easy to crop out.
- If the document has a back side, watermark both sides.
- Send it through a channel you trust, and delete files you no longer need from chats and email.
- Keep the original without a watermark somewhere safe and don't forward it.
If a copy leaks or is misused
Keep evidence such as screenshots and the date you sent the file, tell your bank or any service linked to the ID, and contact the police or your local data protection authority if someone is impersonating you. This is general guidance, not legal advice. For serious cases, talk to a professional.
FAQ
Can the watermark be removed?
It is harder than editing a plain image, especially when the text crosses the whole picture, but no watermark protects 100%.
Can I use one watermark everywhere?
No. Make a new one each time naming the recipient and date, so you can tell which copy went to whom.
