How to Reduce an Image to 200KB or Less (No Software Needed)
Job sites and government forms often limit file size.
Job sites, government systems and online forms often set a maximum file size, such as 200 KB. But photos from modern phones are often several MB, so the upload fails.
KB versus MB
1 MB is 1,024 KB, so a 3 MB photo, about 3,072 KB, has to shrink about 15 times to reach 200 KB.
What makes an image file big
- Resolution: more pixels means a bigger file. Scaling down is usually the biggest saving.
- JPG quality: lowering quality slightly saves a lot, and the eye barely notices.
- File type: photos saved as JPG are usually smaller than PNG.
How to do it with this site's tool
- Open the Resize Photo tool
- Choose an image
- Enter the maximum size in KB, such as 200
- Tap Reduce size. The tool lowers quality step by step and shrinks the picture if that isn't enough
- Check the size shown. If it says still over the limit, try a higher number or a smaller original
- Save the file and upload it
Tips to avoid damaging the picture
- Crop out unneeded parts first. The picture gets smaller without losing quality.
- For documents with small text, don't squeeze too hard. If possible, photograph or scan clearly from the start.
- Check the result before uploading.
The tool runs in your browser, and your picture is never sent to a server.
Two ways to shrink a file
- Lower the quality: the file gets smaller while the picture stays the same size. Good when you only need a modest reduction.
- Reduce the pixels: shrinking the picture cuts file size much more. A 4000×3000 phone photo scaled to about 1600×1200 is still sharp enough for screens and applications.
This site's tool tries both for you, lowering quality first and then scaling the picture down if it is still over the target.
Common size limits
Job sites, school applications and government portals set different caps, such as 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB. Check the rule on each site. Aim a little under the cap to be safe: if the limit is 200 KB, set 180.
Checklist before uploading
- Check which file types the site accepts. Most take JPG.
- Shrink the file to the stated limit.
- Open the result and make sure text is still readable, especially for photographed documents.
- Use a plain file name with English letters and numbers, since some systems reject special characters.
For scans and small text
Text blurs faster than faces. Set a higher target, and shoot or scan the page straight on with even light. Such images also compress better.
FAQ
Will the picture get blurry?
With a very small target it will blur somewhat, because resolution is reduced as well. If the picture must stay sharp, set a higher limit.
What file type is the result?
Always JPG.
